After studying for awhile at Kobe Higher Commercial School, left for France (1921) to work his way through college there, and became a brilliant student of literature and the fine arts.
Kiyoshi Komatsu was deeply influenced by Andre Gide and other French scholars who became his close friends. Returning home after 15 years (1936) he began publishing "Kodo Magazine" in association with Sciichi Funabashi and Tomoji Abe.
Also took active part in introducing French arts and literature to Japan, through lectures and translations of French works.
Among his translations are "Storm in Shanghai" by Andre Malraux "Tour of Soviet Russia" by Andre Gide and several others.
Kiyoshi Komatsu was a secretary of Japanese Pen Club and a permanent director of Tokyo UNESCO Cooperative Association.
