Between 1938 and 1956 he played 112 international games and scored 84 goals. After retiring from competitions he worked as a coach with Hammarby IF.
He competed at the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won a bronze medal in 1952, finishing fourth in 1948 and 1956. He also won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal at the world championships. Nurmela won three Swedish titles with Hammarby IF (1942, 1943, 1945) and was the best Swedish scorer in 1949 and 1950.
