( About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the...)
About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the Christian religion, with its various denominations, from the life of Jesus Christ in the 1st century to the present. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread to all of Europe in the Middle Ages, and since the Renaissance, has expanded throughout the world and become the world's largest religion (with over 2 billion faithful). At first persecuted, but later embraced by the Roman Empire, the East-West Schism, or Great Schism of 1054, separated the Church into Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) branches, i.e., Western Catholicism (based on Rome) and Eastern Orthodoxy (based on Constantinople). The rise of Islam resulted in a number of Crusades fought by Christian Armies from Europe, whose aim was to re-capture and hold Jerusalem. In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Christianity was almost completely removed from the territory that now comprises Turkey. The three most important traditions that emerged from the Protestant Reformation (1521-1610) were the Lutheran, Reformed (Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.), and Anglican traditions. ( About the Book Biblical studies are a set of diverse di...)
About the Book Biblical studies are a set of diverse disciplines that are concerned with a study of the Bible, i.e. the Tanach and the New Testament. There were four gospels comprising the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), and these are the main sources of information about the life of Jesus. Bible studies itself draws on many disciplines ranging from archaeology, ancient history, cultural backgrounds, textual criticism, literary criticism, historical backgrounds, philology, and social science. As to philology for example, most of the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, which formed the basis of the Christian Old Testament, was written in Biblical Hebrew, with a few chapters rendered in Biblical Aramaic. On the other hand, the New Testament was written in Koine Greek. Excerpt from New Studies in Acts The occurrence of the pronoun we in certain sections of the book of Acts probably shows that Luke was with Paul during the periods covered by these sections. If so, he joined him at a seaport in Asia Minor went with him to Philippi in Macedonia (16: but no further (17: I). Some years later he rejoined Paul at Philippi went with him to Jerusalem (21: I7), probably stayed in Palestine for the next two years and certainly accompanied Paul on the perilous Voyage to Rome (27: I; 28: 7, According to one important manuscript Acts reads: As we were gathered together one of them, Agabus by name, etc. If this reading is followed, Luke was with Paul in Syrian Antioch. (How do we tell someone what it means to be a Christian wi...)
How do we tell someone what it means to be a Christian without being patronizing or falling into lingo that only fellow-church-goers understand? And how should we encourage that person to want to become a Christian? This no-nonsense, how-to-convert guide came from real conversations, open forums and questions from inquirers and so it's designed to speak in plain English without all the jargon that simply puts off many of the people we meet. What makes this book unique in the field is that maybe because the author was a Professor of New testament Theology, the answers are of such quality that they appeal to even the most ardent intellectual. Edward Increase Bosworth was born on January 10, 1861 in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Franklin S. and Sarah (Hunt) Bosworth. The first ancestor in this country on his father's side was Benjamin Bosworth, a major in the Revolutionary War.
Edward Bosworth was a student at Oberlin College, 1879-1881, but graduated at Yale in 1883. In the same year he returned to Oberlin to enter the Theological Seminary, from which graduated in 1886. He also studied at the University of Leipzig from 1890 to 1891.
After the graduation from the Theological Seminary in 1886, Edward Bosworth was ordained to the Congregational ministry and served for a year as pastor of the Mt. Vernon Congregational Church. He was then elected professor of English Bible in the Oberlin Theological Seminary (1887), a title changed to professor of New Testament Language and Literature in 1892. He was the dean of the Seminary, 1903-23, and acting president of the College in the difficult war year, 1918-19.
His career was diversified by several years abroad: he was a student in the University of Leipzig, 1890-91; spent the winter of 1891-92 in Athens; lectured in Japan in 1907, in Turkey in 1911, and in Athens in 1927.
It was the influence which Dr. Bosworth exerted upon Oberlin College and through it upon the religious life of his time that imparts to his career its larger significance. Dr. Bosworth was a sound and accurate scholar, but his real power lay in the classroom.
He became one of the chief influences which enabled Oberlin College to effect a change from the older to the more modern points of view in theology without loss of a vital interest in religion.
His books which have had a world-wide circulation have contributed to the same end. Among them are: Studies in the Acts and Epistles (1898); Studies in the Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles (1901); Studies in the Life of Jesus Christ (1904); New Studies in Acts (1908); Christ in Everyday Life (1910); Thirty Studies about Jesus (1917); Commentary on Romans (1919); What It Means to Be a Christian (1922); The Life and Teaching of Jesus (1924).
Edward Bosworth's main achievement was in becoming one of the chief influences of Oberlin College and its acting president from 1918 to 1819. His influence exerted upon the college and through it upon the religious life of his time that imparts to his career its larger significance. Working in closest harmony with his life-long friend, President King, he shaped the ideals and determined the fortunes of Oberlin for almost half a century. Under these two men the institution rapidly and healthfully expanded into one of the strongest colleges in the country.

(Christianity, Bible study)
Edward Increase Bosworth was a part of Congregational ministry in the United States and at one point served for a year as pastor of the Mt. Vernon Congregational Church.
Bosworth had that best gift of a teacher, the ability at once to stir curiosity and to check undisciplined speculation. His life-work fell at a time of transition in theological thinking and when the process of secularization and materialization in our colleges was going on at a rapid rate. His own religion was intellectually well fortified, salted with shrewd common sense, but in its essence mystical.
Bosworth was a member of the following orgnizations: a charter member of Oberlin chapter of Phi Beta Kappa (1907); the Society of Biblical Exegesis, the Society of Social Science, and the Oriental Society.
Edward Increase Bosworth was married to Bertha McClure of Elgin, Illinois, on October 1, 1891.
