Excerpt from Cottages, or Hints on Economical Building: Containing Twenty-Four Plates of Medium and Low Cost Houses, Contributed by Different New York Architects; Together With Descriptive Letterpress, Giving Practical Suggestions for Cottage Building It seems hardly necessary to enlarge upon the importance of an architect's services, since that is now generally recognized. Sensible people, when they are ill, consult a physician and not an apothecary; and when they wish to plan a house, they take the advice of an architect and not a builder. Both apothecary and builder are of course necessary, but they must be wisely directed or they may be dangerous indeed. Arnold William Brunner was born on September 25, 1857 in New York City and was the son of William Brunner and Isabella Solomon.
Brunner received his education in the New York public schools, in the schools of Manchester, England (where the family was resident for a while in connection with the elder Brunner's business), and then again in the New York City public schools. In 1877 he entered the earliest-developed academic school of architecture in the United States, that of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then under the brilliant leadership of William R. Ware, where he graduated in 1879.
After the graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brunner then entered the office of George B. Post in New York City, remaining there for five years; the next three, 1883-85, were spent in extensive travelling in Europe, sketching and studying intensively.
Soon after his return to New York, he formed a partnership with Thomas Tryon, under the name of Brunner & Tryon. It was this partnership which, in 1888, designed the studio of Daniel Chester French on Eleventh St. , and in 1890, Temple Bethel, at Fifth Ave. and Seventy-sixth St.
In 1898, shortly after the partnership of Brunner & Tryon had been dissolved, Brunner won the competition for the Mt. Sinai Hospital; in 1901 the competition for the Federal Building of Cleveland; and in 1910, the competition for a proposed building for the Department of State in Washington, unfortunately never constructed. The winning of these competitions in which the best of the profession participated, gave Brunner a nation-wide fame. Outside of New York the two chief centers of his activity were Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio.
At Harrisburg, in his conduct of the work under his charge, the Capitol Park State Office Buildings, the Plaza between them, and the first design for the Memorial Bridge (not constructed), he set a high standard of honesty and professional idealism, even refusing a salary that would have brought his total receipts up to an amount greater than the usual fee. In recognition of his important work in connection with the Cleveland Civic Centre, he was appointed in 1902 a member of the Board of Supervision of Public Buildings and Grounds, of which he became chairman in 1912.
He was also member of the city planning commissions of Baltimore, Denver, and Rochester, and was appointed to the National Council of Fine Arts by President Roosevelt. In 1913 and 1914 he was architect for the improvement of the water front of the City of Albany, creating out of what had been a dreary chaos, a beautiful composition of river walls, piers, and parked open spaces. In 1923 Mayor John Hylan of New York City, seeking for someone to put into concrete form his ideas of an art center in Central Park, just north of Fifty-ninth St. , appointed Brunner as his architect for this, and a monumental scheme was developed and published. There was an immediate storm of public protest at the proposed use of park land for great buildings, and the scheme was accordingly abandoned.
At the time of his death, Brunner was working on another of those great inclusive schemes so dear to him, a layout for Denison University, Granville, Ohio. Brunner's art was preeminently large in conception, monumental, often severe.
Arnold Brunner managed to gain a nation-wide fame by his dedicated work and also by winning the following competitions: for the Mt. Sinai Hospital; in 1901 the competition for the Federal Building of Cleveland; and in 1910, the competition for a proposed building for the Department of State. Besides New York City he was also active in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio. At Harrisburg he was in charge of buildding of the Capitol Park State Office Buildings, the Plaza between them, and he also conducted the first design for the Memorial Bridge (not constructed). However, the chief work was the Cleveland Civic Centre, which was greatly recognized and for which he was appointed a member of the Board of Supervision of Public Buildings and Grounds in 1902, and then became its chairman in 1912. He was also for many years a member of the American Institute of Architects, and president of its New York chapter, 1909-10, and of the Architectural League, 1903-04. He was made a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1913, and was its treasurer, 1914-25. He was also a member of the National Sculpture Society, and of the Fine Arts Federation of New York, vice-president of the American Civic Association; associate of the National Academy of Design, 1910, and member, 1916; member of the New York Board of Education, 1902, and of the New York Fine Arts Commission, 1908-10.

His sense of monumental planning was complete; he always attempted to gain an almost rugged simplicity of general idea. In style, his taste was toward an ever-increasing Roman classicism, for he never returned to the brilliant originality of his first great achievement, the square domed Temple Bethel, whose detail is somewhat reminiscent of the modified Romanesque of Richardson.
Although the Mt. Sinai and Columbia buildings are somewhat French in their Renaissance feeling, it was in such purely classic work as that at Harrisburg and Cleveland that Brunner's personality found most complete expression; the square masses at Cleveland with their heavy rusticated basements and ranked orders above being peculiarly characteristic in their almost stark strength.
In his work for Denison University, however, there is greater lightness and delicacy; Georgian influence is noticeable.
Brunner was also a member of the National Sculpture Society, and of the Fine Arts Federation of New York, vice-president of the American Civic Association; associate of the National Academy of Design, 1910.
Brunner was married in 1906, to Emma B. Kaufman of San Francisco.
Brunner was the author, in collaboration with Thomas Tryon, of Interior Decoration (1887); in collaboration with Charles Downing Lay, landscape architect, of Studies for Albany (1914), prepared at the request of the Mayor of Albany; and in collaboration with Frederick Law Olmstead and Bion J. Arnold, of the City Plan for Rochester (1911).
